Fashion Week for the Fashionably Challenged.

Written by: Ilbra Abramian on 06 May 2004

Fashion fever and excitement has taken over all of Sydney this week, which is convenient considering it also Mercedes Australian Fashion Week. This Sunday will see "beautiful people" modelling clothes in Circular Quay and wishful by-standers "oohing and ahhing" over awesome Autumn/Winter collections from designers such as Wayne Cooper, Lisa Ho and Peter Morrissey. OK so maybe the crowds will be paying more attention to the models parading the clothes, ESPECIALLY when the cheeky lingerie collections come out to play. If you do happen to pay a visit, make sure that somewhere in between using the line "So you're a model ey?" and getting drunk enough to rationalise calling your ex up, you spare a thought for the sadly ostracised geek-models that for years now, have been trying to set their style apart from the fashion norm of 'cool clothing', tirelessly slaving away year after year, trying to create the perfect balance of geek and chic. These people are in fact victims, savagely neglected by the fashion-conscious who refuse to recognise the value of their undiscovered fashion genius. Despite this fact, the X-breed, as I like to call them, are slowly growing in numbers and gaining enough confidence to show their fashion mastery in public. You may not have realised it, but it is likely that at one stage or another, you would have seen one of them, perhaps while making your way down to the local grocery store, conveniently situated next to a PC Game Room. You may have passed judgement on them for their "sloppy" or "un-cool" dress sense and cast them into the realm of fashion victims desperately needing a visit by the Fab-5 or Trinny and Susannah from "What Not to Wear". Well I am here to convince you that these people have it all figured out. They have found a smorgasbord of fashion designs with emphasis on convenience, light weight attire and masculinity. In addition, this season's Asian infusions have shown vibrant and outrageous choices in hair styles and accessories. Watch out Morrissey, here come the Penguin Posse.

Picture 1: Coke is Cool

This IT professional has demonstrated the versatility offered by a coca cola cap. Not only does it block out the Sun's harmful rays, but it also alludes to his beverage preferences.

Picture 2: Roll up Jeans:

Again, another versatile fashion choice with the rolled up jeans. A fact that designers DO NOT account for is that not everyone is 6 foot 5. What better solution than to include two tones of denim AND shorten your pants to fit your leg length at the same time?

Picture 3: Colourful Hair highlights & Billy Jean hat

Notice the outrageous colours and highlights used to accentuate the mushroom haircut style. Geek fashion pushes the limits and dares to question what is acceptable, demonstrated by the gentleman showing off his Billy Jean Style black felt hat combined with his patch patterned business shirt. Picture 4: jogging shoes, polo shirt, soft cord pants

This is what I like to call the "athletic look". The light weight polo shirt helps you maintain a minimal sweat level; useful in compromising situations like when you are sitting at a computer terminal that is adjacent to another terminal at which a member of the opposite sex is sitting. Additionally, the jogging shoes (air-pump supplied) are sure to save you a hospital bill in the event that you are attacked by a group of delinquent teenage gangsters.

Picture 5: Kangaroo Joey Jumper

Remember that old classic tale of Joey the baby kangaroo. Doesn't this picture remind you of that sweet tale? Definitely a winner for the soft hearted females.

Picture 7: Jacket or Waste Belt?

This model demonstrates how your jacket actually serves more than just to keep you warm. In fact, in tying your jacket around your waste, you are defining your curvaceous hips AND making your upper body look broader than it is. This geek-model looks good and he knows it.

Picture 8: Minimum colour, Maximum effect!:

Black is the new modem minimalism art era for fashion. Black says "I don't give a **** you work it out".

Picture 9: The Bun Bag

This is the outfit for big spenders. Not only does the bun bag imply a large and immediate cash supply, it also has sex appeal in its visual reference the owner's well-endowed manhood.

I hope that you are finally convinced that geek fashion does deserve a place in fashion week and in the fashion world as a whole. It is a must that geeks all over the world be recognised for their dedication to creating the perfect balance of geek and chic in their fashion styles.
